Bimini & The Fountain of Youth

According to tradition, the natives of Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and Cuba told the early Spanish explorers that in Bimini (Beniny), a land to the north, there was a river, spring or fountain where waters had such miraculous curative powers that any old person who bathed in them would regain his youth. About the time of Columbus's first voyage, says the legend, an Arawak chief named Sequene, inspired by the fable of the curative waters, had migrated from Cuba to southern Florida. It seems that other parties of islanders had made attempts to find Bimini, which was generally described as being in the region of the Bahamas.

Juan Ponce de Leon (1460-1521), who had been with Columbus on his second voyage in 1493 and who had later conquered and become governor of Puerto Rico, is supposed to have learned of the fable from the Indians. The fable was not new, and probably Pence de Leon was vaguely cognizant of the fact that such waters had been mentioned by medieval writers, and that Alexander the Great had searched for such waters in eastern Asia. A similar legend was known to the Polynesians, whose tradition located the fountain of perpetual youth in Hawaii.

Fox Hill Day Festival

Freedom is the word that will be on the lips of every Fox-Hillian as they celebrate the annual Fox Hill Festival, the oldest one-day festival in the country on Tuesday, Aug. 14, but celebrations leading up to the big day get underway tonight at Fox Hill Parade at 8 p.m.

And you should be there to celebrate with them, as it's the second largest annual festival next to Junkanoo, and Fox-Hillians are expected to put on a show of grandeur for you, because it's a celebration tinged with nostalgia and joy over the abolition of slavery.

But now it's more about watching the men try to climb the greasy pole, and the young girls plaiting the maypole. And the festival which has been celebrated for the past 19 years will showcase 80 food booths spread out over the two parks-the Fox Hill Parade and Freedom Park, as Fox-Hillians make way for Bahamians from the length and breadth of New Providence to celebrate with them.

This year's celebrations are expected to be spectacularly nostalgic under the theme, "People Celebrating People," inspired by the original celebrations of our ancestors.

We are a people that have grown into such diversity in color, tradition and heritage that it is breath-taking to witness year-after-year how we as a nation come together to celebrate our common forefathers and the people who suffered, struggled and triumphed to create this nation of people.

This is the time of year that Fox-Hillians showcase their pride, and this year like previous years is meant to exhibit that pride in self and country in the celebrations which started in 1834.

"We've always had festivities in one form or the other to celebrate the abolition of slavery. The festival itself was established in 1988 and combines the two signature days, Emancipation Day and Fox Hill Day. This year we are having the normal festivities but this year we've added the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Marching Band and Pop Band," said Maurice Tynes, vice-chairman of the Fox Hill Festival Committee.

"We as Fox-Hillians are a proud people. It's tradition. It's the one part of The Bahamas that has consistently celebrated this original freedom year after year. Other villages stopped celebrating as passionately, unlike us. So that's where I think the real pride comes from," he said.

Outsiders and Fox-Hillians alike will be able entertained with a cultural show, which will conclude with a colorful demonstration by the Farm Road Marching Band and the Fox Hill Congos Junkanoo group, with fireworks to delight the littlest and oldest of people celebrating.

On Emancipation Day morning, Monday, Aug. 6, Junkanoo groups in large numbers will converge on the village for a parade which will be the last one of the year before groups go to the shacks to commence the building of costumes for Christmas and New Year's Day. A significant event in the festival in the Emancipation Day Memorial The Service on Monday at 11 a.m.on Fox Hill Parade. The Service will be attended by government officials headed by the Governor General. The festival feast, at which 500 guests are expected, will be follow.

And his audience continues to widen: to westerners Bob's apocalyptic truths prove inspirational and life-changing; in the Third World his impact goes much further. Not just among Jamaicans, but also the Hopi Indians of New Mexico and the Maoris of New Zealand, in Indonesia and India, and especially in those parts of West Africa from wihch slaves were plucked and taken to the New World, Bob is seen as a redeemer figure returning to lead this

In the clear Jamaican sunlight you can pick out the component parts of which the myth of Bob Marley is comprised: the sadness, the love, the understanding, the Godgiven talent. Those are facts. And although it is sometimes said that there are no facts in Jamaica, there is one more thing of which we can be certain: Bob Marley never wrote a bad song. He left behind the most remarkable body of recorded work. "The reservoir of music he has left behind is like an encyclopedia," says Judy Mowatt of the I-Threes. "When you need to refer to a certain situation or crisis, there will always be a Bob Marley song that will relate to it. Bob was a musical prophet."

The tiny Third World country of Jamaica has produced an artist who has transcended all categories, classes, and creeds through a combination of innate modesty and profound wisdom. Bob Marley, the Natural Mystic, may yet prove to be the most significant musical artist of the twentieth century.

Bob Marley gave the world brilliant and evocative music; his work stretched across nearly two decades and yet still remains timeless and universal. Bob Marley & the Wailers worked their way into the very fabric of our lives.

"He's taken his place alongside James Brown and Sly Stone as a pervasive influence on r&b", says the American critic Timothy White, author of the acclaimed Bob Marley biography "Catch a Fire: The life of Bob Marley. "His music was pure rock, in the sense that it was a public expression of a private truth."

It is important to consider the roots of this legend: the first superstar from the Third World, Bob Marley was one of the most charismatic and challenging performers of our time and his music could have been created from only one source: the street culture of Jamaica.

The days of slavery are a recent folk memory on the island. They have permeated the very essence of Jamaica's culture, from the plantation of the mid-nineteenth century to the popular music of our own times. Although slavery was abolished in 1834, the Africans and their descendants developed their own culture with half-remembered African traditions mingled with the customs of the British.

This hybrid culture, of course, had parallels with the emerging black society in America. Jamaica, however, remained a rural community which, without the industrialisation of its northern neighbour, was more closely rooted to its African legacy.

By the start of the twentieth century that African heritage was given political expression by Marcus Garvey, a shrewd Jamaican preacher and entrepreneur who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). The organisation advocated the creation of a new black state in Africa, free from white domination. As the first step in this dream, Garvey founded the Black Star Line, a steamship company which, in popular imagination at least, was to take the black population from America and the Caribbean back to their homeland of Africa.

A few years later, in 1930, Ras Tafari Makonnen was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia and took a new name, Haile Selassie, The Emperor claimed to be the 225th ruler in a line that stretched back to Menelik, the son of Solomon and Sheba.

The Marcus Garvey followers in Jamaica, consulting their New Testaments for a sign, believed Haile Selassie was the black king whom Garvey had prophesied would deliver the Negro race. It was the start of a new religion called Rastafari.

Fifteen years later, in Rhoden Hall to the north of Jamaica, Bob Marley was born. His mother was an 18-year-old black girl called Cedella Booker while his father was Captain Norval Marley, a 50-year-old white quartermaster attached to the British West Indian Regiment.

The couple married in 1944 and Robert Nesta Marley was born on Feb. 6, 1945. Norval Marley's family, however, applied constant pressure and, although he provided financial support, the Captain seldom saw his son who grew up in the rural surroundings of St. Ann to the north of the island.

For country people in Jamaica, the capital Kingston was the city of their dreams, the land of opportunity. The reality was that Kingston had little work to offer, yet through the Fifties and Sixties, people flooded to the city. The newcomers, despite their rapid disillusion with the capital, seldom returned to the rural parishes. Instead, they squatted in the shanty towns that grew up in western Kingston, the most notorious of which was Trench town (so named because it was built over a ditch that drained the sewage of old Kingston.)

Bob Marley, barely into his teens, moved to Kingston in the late 1950's. Like many before them, Marley and his mother eventually settled in Trenchtown. His friends were other street youths, also impatient with their place in Jamaican society. One friend in particular was Neville O'Riley Livingston, known as Bunny, with whom Bob took his first hesitant musical steps.

The two youths were fascinated by the extraordinary music they could pick up from American radio stations. In particular there was one New Orleans station broadcasting the latest tunes by such artists as Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Curtis Mayfield and Brook Benton. Bob and Bunny also paid close attention to the black vocal groups, such as the Drifters, who were extremely popular in Jamaica.

When Bob quit school he seemed to have but one ambition: music. Although he took a job in a welding shop, Bob spent all his free time with Bunny, perfecting their vocal abilities. They were helped by one of Trench Town's famous residents, the singer Joe Higgs who held informal lessons for aspiring vocalists in the tenement yards. It was at one of those sessions that Bob and Bunny met Peter McIntosh, another youth with big musical ambitions.

In 1962 Bob Marley auditioned for a local music entrepreneur called Leslie Kong. Impressed by the quality of Bob's vocals, Kong took the young singer into the studio to cut some tracks, the first of which, called "Judge Not", was released on Beverley's label. It was Marley's first record.

The other tunes – including "Terror" and "One Cup of Coffe" –received no airplay and attracted little attention. At the very least, however, they confirmed Marley's ambition to be a singer. By the following year Bob had decided the way forward was with a group. He linked up with Bunny and Peter to form The Wailing Wailers.

The new group had a mentor, a Rastafarian hand drummer called Alvin Patterson, who introduced the youths to Clement Dodd,, a record producer in Kingston. In the summer of 1963 Dodd auditioned The Wailing Wailers and, pleased with the results, agreed to record the group.

It was the time of ska music, the hot new dance floor music with a pronounced back-beat. Its origins incorporated influences from Jamaica's African traditions but, more immediately, from the heady beats of New Orleans' rhythm and blues disseminated from American radio stations and the burgeoning sound systems on the streets of Kingston. Clement – Sir Coxsone – Dodd was one of the city's finest sound system men.

The Wailing Wailers released their first single, "Simmer Down", on the Coxsone label during the last weeks of 1963. By the following January it was number one in the Jamaican charts, a position it held for the next two months. The group – Bob, Bunny and Peter together with Junior Braithwaite and two back-up singers, Beverly Kelso and Cherry Smith – were big news.

"Simmer Down' caused a sensation in Jamaica and The Wailing Wailers began recording regularly for Coxsone Dodd's Studio One Company. The groups' music also found new themes, identifying with the Rude Boy street rebels in the Kingston slums. Jamaican music had found a tough, urban stance.

Over the next few years The Wailing Wailers put out some 30sides that properly established the group.

Calling all Skylines, calling all race cars, The Fast and the Furious has hit Nassau. The third Annual Island Tunerz Summer Nationalz will hit the streets, Aug. 10-12.

It will not only be weekend for owners to show off their "tricked out" rides but also to legally race and finally find out who's the best driver in Nassau's street racing world.

The weekend will rev up on the initial Friday night with sinful racing under a cloak of darkness, at the Motor Sports Track in the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre.

The following Saturday is designated to the grand Auto Show which is open to anyone who wants to showcase his car and browse others to view other flaming vehicles.

But for the real action, you have to be there on Sunday for the "Race Day" in which all participants can race against other cars in their designated class. This weekend is open to all people interested in the racing world no matter your age, sex or race.

This weekend is expected to be hot, and racing enthusiasts had better not miss it.

And of course, Bahamians love to eat, so there will be booths set up with food, drinks and the hottest products on the market.

This year's drifting weekend is powered by Pepsi Bahamas Ltd., The Paint Depot, Tunerz Auto Salon, The Bacardi Company and Head's Up! Network Ltd.

Some of the top companies that were in attendance last year that are likely to be back this year are, RMS Motorsports, Flying Low Audio, Red Bull, Installer Institute of Daytona, FL., and Jukebox.

The holiday celebrates the emancipation of slavery in the British Colonies in 1834. The holiday is celebrated with a Junkanoo Rush out, a day of beaching, sailing, and regattas in New Providence and the Out Islands. In New Providence old slave villages such as Gambier in the west and Fox Hill in the east have their own special celebrations.

The Native Fishing Tournament, held the first week of August around Emancipation Day, was established in 1950 by The Bimini Progressive Sporting Club.

The object of the tournament was to build camaraderie between the locals and visitors in a street festival atmosphere. The tournament started with 12 boats and grew to be one of the largest tournaments held in The Bahamas.

The Sporting Club will forever be indebted to the founders, organizers, past presidents and committee members who are deceased: Gloria Johnson, Harcourt Brown, Naaman Rollins, Douglas Weech & Alvin Taylor. The club also salutes those faithful leaders and committee members, George Weech, Elsie Weech, Eleanor & Roger Spindler, Alma Brown, Walter Weech, Anthony Stuart, and the Honorable Minister of Tourism, Obie Wilchcombe, who are working to ensure that this tournament continues to be a huge success.

A great part of the fun during the tournament comes from the activities held each night. It is here that the long tales are told of the "one that got away;" it is here where the locals and visitors rub shoulders and clink glasses or sway gaily to the tunes of Calypso music.

What are Propaganda Techniques? They are the methods and approaches used to spread ideas that further a cause - a political, commercial, religious, or civil cause.

Why are they used? To manipulate the readers’ or viewers’ reason and emotions; to persuade you to believe in something or someone, buy an item, or vote a certain way.

What are the most commonly used propaganda techniques? See which of the ten most common types of propaganda techniques you already know.

Name calling: This techniques consists of attaching a negative label to a person or a thing. People engage in this type of behavior when they are trying to avoid supporting their own opinion with facts. Rather than explain what they believe in, they prefer to try to tear their opponent down.

Glittering Generalities: This technique uses important-sounding “glad words” that have little or no real meaning. These words are used in general statements that cannot be proved or disproved. Words like “good,” “honest,” “fair,” and “best” are examples of “glad” words.

Transfer: In this technique, an attempt is made to transfer the prestige of a positive symbol to a person or an idea. For example, using the American flag as a backdrop for a political event makes the implication that the event is patriotic in the best interest of the U.S.

False Analogy: In this technique, two things that may or may not really be similar are portrayed as being similar. When examining the comparison, you must ask yourself how similar the items are. In most false analogies, there is simply not enough evidence available to support the comparison.

Testimonial: This technique is easy to understand. It is when “big name” personalities are used to endorse a product. Whenever you see someone famous endorsing a product, ask yourself how much that person knows about the product, and what he or she stands to gain by promoting it.

Plain Folks: This technique uses a folksy approach to convince us to support someone or something. These ads depict people with ordinary looks doing ordinary activities.

Card Stacking: This term comes from stacking a deck of cards in your favor. Card stacking is used to slant a message. Key words or unfavorable statistics may be omitted in an ad or commercial, leading to a series of half-truths. Keep in mind that an advertiser is under no obligation “to give the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

Bandwagon: The “bandwagon” approach encourages you to think that because everyone else is doing something, you should do it too, or you’ll be left out. The technique embodies a “keeping up with the Joneses” philosophy.

Either/or fallacy: This technique is also called “black-and-white thinking” because only two choices are given. You are either for something or against it; there is no middle ground or shades of gray. It is used to polarize issues, and negates all attempts to find a common ground.

Faulty Cause and Effect: This technique suggests that because B follows A, A must cause B. Remember, just because two events or two sets of data are related does not necessarily mean that one caused the other to happen. It is important to evaluate data carefully before jumping to a wrong conclusion.

The crawfish and marine turtle seasons open today and the Department of Marine Resources is asking the cooperation of the fishing community in preserving and "safeguarding the sustainability" of The Bahamas’ marine resources.

Last year, Bahamian fishermen landed $92 million worth of crawfish, according to Deputy Director of the Department Edison Deleveaux.

Mr. Deleveaux touted the rules and regulations as effective measures to ensure the sustainability of the country’s marine resources.

"That’s the whole idea of fisheries management from our standpoint…We know we lack the resources to properly police our waters. We’re making it in such a way that the average fisherman who goes to sea is aware of what we’re trying to achieve and through his action he can help us to enforce," the deputy director said.

"In other words, he can become our eyes, he can become our ears at sea, and advise us of things that are going contrary, and provide that information for us to act on."

A Department of Marine Resources press release, issued on the eve of the opening of the seasons, reminded that the legal measurement on whole crawfish is a carapace, or jacket, length of three and one quarter inches and a tail length of five and one half inches.

Time to Think: What Do You Want?

Anyone who’s involved in counseling of any kind, will be aware of the fact, that there are unfortunately a whole lot of unhappy people spread throughout this great big world of ours. Now, from my own personal experience, I honestly believe, that one of the main underlying reasons why so many people are in fact very unhappy with themselves, is simply because they have no direction. That’s right, countless thousands of people are just going along from day to day, hoping in a very vague way, that something good will happen to them.

My Friend, believe you me, that’s not the way life works. If any person wishes to build a meaningful life, a life which is deeply satisfying to the soul, the very first thing which one simply MUST do, is to clearly and indeed specifically establish exactly what one wants out of life. Yes my Friend, far too many people don’t actually know what they want, they literally don’t know where they’re going, thus they can’t really expect to arrive at a worthwhile destination.

As I have relayed to you my valued readers on more than one occasion in the past, one of the best definitions of ‘Success’ that I ever heard comes from my mentor Earl Nightingale, and it goes like this. ‘Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal’. So what this means in effect, is that in order to be successful, you simply must have a series of specific goals for all areas of your life, which you’re progressively working towards.

If you don’t have any goals, like unfortunately an estimated 95% of the people in the world, there’s absolutely no possible way in which you can become successful. And My Friend, it is because so many people do not have goals, do not know exactly what they want, that they are wandering aimlessly from day to day, in a most unhappy state of mind.

So My Friend, how do you personally answer the most important question posed by the title of this article ‘What do you want?’. This question must be deeply pondered and then specifically answered, before a person can commence their journey toward ultimate perfection on the road to success. So today, I want you to sit down quietly by yourself to determine exactly what you want out of life. You simply MUST establish a series of Specific Goals and Objectives for all areas of your life. When you know what you want, once you have established your goals, then you need to draw up a detailed plan for their achievement.

Finally, you must become a person of ACTION, so that you daily get the things done, which will assist you in the achievement of your predetermined goals and objectives. Yes My Friend, once you know what you want and where you want to go; believe you me, you’ll be full of the Supreme Joy of Life, day in and day out.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, an iconoclastic filmmaker widely regarded as one of the great masters of modern cinema, died Monday, the president of his foundation said. He was 89. "It's an unbelievable loss for Sweden, but even more so internationally," Astrid Soderbergh Widding, president of The Ingmar Bergman Foundation, which administers the directors' archives, told The Associated Press.

Bergman died at his home in Faro, Sweden, Swedish news agency TT said, citing his daughter Eva Bergman. A cause of death was not immediately available.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – In cold rain on Saturday night at the Joao Havelange Olympic Stadium here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the men's 4 x 400 meters (m) relay team came through with more gold for The Bahamas as the 15th Pan American Games was brought to close.

They brought the curtain down on what was truly a spectacular games for team Bahamas, as they ended the meet in grand style with another gold medal performance. The Bahamas finished the games with six medals – two gold, two silver and two bronze medals, and Chris Brown was a part of both gold medals.

Social change requires artists who are willing to risk radically interrupting Old Stories in order to tell new ones. Social movements
often fail because Old Stories have been merely reconstituted into so-called new ones. Instead of rupturing the expected order,
there has been a failure of imagination at the moment of rupture so that Old Stories continue in the guise of new.

As writers and artists who are also socially engaged thinkers and dreamers, we have the radical responsibility to imagine: to imagine well.
What are the Old Stories we have been told about ourselves, our communities, our nation that we would like to talk back to? What
are the Old Stories we have been told that need changing, revising, or wholesale breaking into and away from so that a new story
can rise up and take its place? What role does imagination play in the creation of New Stories? Who has the right to imagine?
Do you? What hinders, holds up, shuts down imagination? How can we liberate the imagination, all the better to tell a new story?

During the course of three 3-hour intensive sessions we will read and discuss excerpts from poems, novels and essays. Listen to
music. Look at visual works. We will explore the questions above and our own answers to them. We will bring to the table stories
we have inherited and which we want to change. Through in-class exercises,we will interrupt these stories, bringing our authority
as human beings and our imaginations as artists to bear on our endeavors. Each participant will be encouraged to work in a
medium or genre of their own choosing.The workshop will culminate in a presentation/performance of our collective imaginings.

"Show Me Your Motion" Screening

Show Me Your Motion explores issues of gender, national identity, globalization, class and race in The Bahamas, a prosperous Caribbean nation renowned for its tourism. Producer and Director Ian Strachan addresses these issues through candid, often humorous interviews and live recordings of the ribald children's songs and dances that are a part of "Ringplay." Along the way Bahamians of many walks of life weigh in on the issues: artists, politicians, scholars, teachers, and children too. The film, narrated by Strachan, opens with the statement, "I know what the world thinks of The Bahamas; what they see. I know what we sell. The fantasy, the dream of a vacation in Paradise. No rain, no worries . . . But who do we believe we are?" By celebrating the laughter, joy and freedom that epitomize Ringplay, the film affords us a compelling glance at complex issues through an often-overlooked lens: the eyes of our children. Strachan takes his cameras throughout schoolyards in The Bahamas and even travels as far south as St. Lucia and Trinidad to reveal the inspiring passion for invention and celebration that so many Caribbean children possess. During the process it becomes clear that Bahamian society has changed greatly since the days of British colonialism and the onslaught of American popular culture. However, the film suggests that there is as much beauty and strength to be found in the country's links with its neighbors as there is in all that remains unique and different about its culture.

Ms. Beauchamp-Byrd is an art historian and curator whose work has engaged the Caribbean in a number of major exhibitions. The gallery has asked her to share her work in this area - particularly as it relates to the Caribbean component of the "Black" British Arts movement and notions of Diaspora and I hope that you choose to attend.

Tammy Faye Messner, who as Tammy Faye Bakker helped her husband, Jim, build a multimillion-dollar evangelism empire and then saw it collapse in disgrace, has died. She was 65.

Messner, who had battled colon cancer since 1996 that more recently spread to her lungs, died peacefully at her home Friday, said her booking agent, Joe Spotts, in an e-mail to the Associated Press.

A family service was held Saturday in a private cemetery, where her ashes were interred, he said.

When Nivea Smith decides to retire from track and field, her name will still ring loudly through the Bahamas Association of Athletic Association (BAAA). The young sprinting sensation became the first Bahamian to win a medal, of any color, at the IAAF World Youth Championships, which were held in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Smith crossed the finished line in a time of 23.69 seconds, for the bronze medal in the women's 200 meters. The performance was far off of Smith's personal best time, 23.45 seconds, which was recorded at this year's Carifta Games, held in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. At the games, Smith earned two gold medals, in the 200m and the junior women's 4x100m team, which set a new junior national record.

The Freeport native went into the World Youth Championships with a third place ranking, based on the IAAF World Youth top performance listing, but heading into the finals she had recorded the second fastest time.

Also with rankings on the performance listing were Barbara Leoncio, who was ranked sixth and Chalonda Goodman, of the United States, ranked second.

Winning the event at the championships, which concluded yesterday, Leoncio in a time of 23.50 seconds, a new personal best record for her. The silver medal went to Chalonda Goodman, of the United States in a time of 23.54 seconds.

Although Smith is set to wrap-up her season, the future looks bright for her. She will be expected to lead the under 20 girls once again at the upcoming Carifta Games, set for St. Kitts and Nevis in April of next year.

Bahamas National Anthem Music

The Bahamian National Anthem was written by Timothy Gibson in 1972 and adopted in 1973.

The symbolism of the Bahamian Flag is as follows: Black, a strong colour, represents the vigour and force of a united people, the triangle pointing towards the body of the flag represents the enterprise and determination of the Bahamian people to develop and possess the rich resources of land and sea symbolized by gold and aquamarine respectively

The Bahamian National Coat of Arms were officially adopted on July 12, 1971. The arms show the Santa Maria, the flagship of Columbus, who discovered the islands. The sun symbolizes the sunny climate. On the shield is placed a shell, which symbolizes the dependency of the islands on the sea. The supporters are a flamingo (the national bird) and a marlin.

The Bahamian National Motto is "Forward, Upward, Onward Together".

Bimini Boat Building

"The Bimini Bonefisher," a custom handcrafted work of art, is the latest creation of Ansil Saunders, a fifth generation boat builder. His boats have been shown at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show and in Nassau, The Bahamas. Mr. Saunders builds one boat per year, and construction usually takes about 10 weeks.

A 16-foot, $13,000 skiff, the Bonefisher is built to pursue bonefish in water as shallow as five inches deep. Mahogany, native horseflesh wood from South Bimini and oak are used to construct his boats. Other materials include solid brass screws, epoxy glue, fiberglass and varnish. Plus, a 20-gallon aluminum gas tank, a battery and an oil well are also included.

Mr. Saunders guarantees that this boat is unique to Bimini and it has proven to be the most effective vessel on the bonefish flats, because of its durability and shallow draft.

This well-respected businessman is also a Bimini-born bonefisherman. He is a renowned sports ambassador, through his lifelong talent as a bonefish guide, a bone-fishing world record holder, and the recipient of the prestigious 2003 Cacique Award (Minister’s Award).

Mr. Saunders first received recognition as the fisherman who guided the late civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr., when he supposedly came to Bimini in search of serenity and to clear his mind. Mr. Saunders took him out in his boat to spots that were very peaceful. On this outing Martin Luther King Jr. took notes for his speech that later earned him the Noble Peace Prize.

Get ready to feel the heat, because "Countess Pepper" is heating up the stage!

The "Queen of Fire" is mesmerizing as she lights up the stage on Friday nights in the Sun Fun Resorts, West Bay Street, and she is beckoning all and sundry to come and feel her heat, along with "Count" Bernardino, the Fame Dancers, limbo dancers, steel pan players, congo drummers, as well as live band and Junkanoo.

"We're trying to bring back all of the cultural movements, and the cultural dancers, said "Countess Pepper" aka Angelique Rollins-Watson, who performs in front of a mixed audience of Bahamians and tourists. "We have so many talented entertainers here in The Bahamas that are underground, she said, adding that it's time for the native show to make a resurrection.

"Countess Pepper", whose life has been dedicated to entertainment, heats things up each week at the native Bahamian show "Fire".

And audiences will not too soon forget her self-taught fire dance number which she has performed to perfection for the past 20 years.

"Nobody really taught me the art of fire dancing, but growing up I did see the Chipman girls and other fire dancers from back in the day," said "Countess Pepper" who began her professional career as a chorus line dancer, but has enthralled her fans over the years with her stage show.

Her first performance using fire as part of her act began as a case of someone else's bad day becoming her lucky day. She was performing in a show and the fire dancer didn't show up. She became the unrehearsed understudy of the show and since then her flame of interest in the art form has grown to a roaring blaze on stage.

Fire dancing looks like a risky job, but for the entertainer it's mind over matter.

"It really burns, and it does

sometimes sting, but for me I have taken it to another level now. I've

learned to concentrate and I've learned to block out a lot of the fear of fire," said "Countess Pepper" who is known for her performances both regionally and internationally.

She says matter-of-factly, however, that mishaps can happen on stage, although she has been lucky to have experienced a minimum of those.

The weekend show which is managed by FAME (Fire Star Entertainment), is not just another native show of familiar acts. "Countess Pepper" believes in bringing something different to the table each week in the true spirit of entertainment."Everyone has seen fire dancing. There were a lot of fire dancers in the field at one point and I wanted to be number one. To make myself number one I had to study the craft and see what other people around the Caribbean were doing and try to beat that, not just match it," said the entertainer who doesn't look a day over 21, but you know that she isn't because she has been in the game for 20-plus years. And "Countess Pepper" can be counted on to perform some daring and eye-opening acts.

"When I come on stage I give you an A-one performance. That's how I want Bahamians to perceive the show in general," said "Countess Pepper" who also teaches jazz, Latin, cultural, fire, ballet and belly dancing.

But the goal for the "Queen of Fire" is to ensure that native acts such as her own return to prominence in the country, because she said that form of entertainment is tough, and a dying source of income she said.

And she believes the reason that authentic native entertainment is being phased out is due to Bahamians' growing preference for what "Countess Pepper" describes as typical American Broadway-type shows.

Despite this "Countess Pepper" has still managed to make herself a household name. Part of her fame may be due to the fact that she is also popular overseas.

And Bahamians should ensure that they come to see this fire-eating femme fatale, because as she puts it, "if you have a show and it doesn't include "Countess Pepper", then you don't have a show."

25. Visit the Versailles Gardens and Cloisters located on Paradise Island. It's a romantic spot with fantastic ocean views. Across the street are the Cloisters, a colonnade from a 14th-century Augustinian monastery.

26. Shopping. Explore downtown (Bay Street) stores and check out the Olde Town Shopping Center, Sandyport.

27. Visit the Bacardi Rum Distillery located on Bacardi Road for a free daily tour. Tours begin at 11 am and 2 PM.

28. Shoot pool at Top Shottas or similar restaurants and bars.

29. Enjoy oysters on the half shell and the stone crab claws on the island while tackling all the drinks you'll have during happy hour at the Oyster Bar in Sandy Port.

30. Canoeing at Lake Nancy.

31. Walk over the Paradise Island bridge with a camera. Nassau Harbour makes a great photo-op for couples.

32. Take a ferry from Prince George Wharf to Paradise Island. A round trip ticket is only $6 (three for one-way). Most harbor-tour passengers arrived by cruiseship, but the small ferries give all passengers an opportunity to see the massive ships up close. A guide will identify common Nassau/Paradise Island landmarks from the water.

33. Grab a $3 slice of home-made quiche at News Cafe at Hurricane Hole on Paradise Island. Free wireless Internet and communal copies of newspapers from four different countries (Bahamas, United States, United Kingdom, Italy) are available.

34. Take a dive off the reef at the end of Cabbage Beach. Cabbage is unquestionably the nicest beach on Nassau/Paradise Island. At more than a mile from the 500+ room Atlantis, the east end of the beach is relatively quiet. Swimming is safe, but reef diving is only recommended for strong swimmers; current is swift and visitors have drowned in the area.

35. Order a Kalik Gold and watch a golden sunset from Nesbitt's outdoor patio. The local watering hole is on West Bay just beyond Sandy Port and looks over a public park and natural reef.

36. Catch one of the best improvisational jazz shows on the island at the open-air stage of Jumbey Cafe on East Bay Street (next to Esso/On the Run). Bring your sax if you want to play, the group of local musicians come together to share their passion for jazz each week and encourages the audience to contribute. If you don't play, then sing. It's up to you. No cover for the show and strong gin and tonics are available.

37. There's only one night a week you can get the best conch fritters on the island. Drive west on Bay Street and stop at Traveler's Rest on Saturday night to enjoy cold beer, warm fritters and good company. Try to find a spot on their patio and listen to the ocean as you take in the meal.

38. Free outdoor independent film screenings at the National Art Gallery (next to Graycliff restaurant). Beer, wine and bottled water are available for purchase. Guests are allowed to bring their own refreshments. Films may be inappropriate for children, so parents are advised to check ratings before taking the family.

39. Go to Joker's Wild comedy club located in the Atlantis Hotel, Paradise Island.

40. Try Hartley's Undersea Walk. A futuristic helmet filled with air keeps you breathing while you walk the ocean floor. These tours allow everyone to view the marine life of the Caribbean.

41. Day Spa.

42. Watch a cricket game at the cricket club on Fort Charlotte or a rugby game at the Winton Rugby Field.

43. Visit Marina village on Friday and Saturday to watch Junkanoo.

44. Take a guided walking tour of downtown Nassau.

45. Stop at Cozy Corner for drinks at Sandyport.

46. Dance the night away at the Island Club on Saturday night.

47. Snorkel at Rose Island.

48. Have a late-night experience and head to Flamingo Cigars & Gourmet Cafe to listen to the all-girl Latin band while sipping on fabulous coffee and enjoying a wonderful cigar.

The Abaco Wild Horse

GREAT ABACO, BAHAMAS...Once, they were a mighty herd, perhaps 200 strong: pinto, bay and roan horses rippling through thousands of acres of pine forest. They were as free as the sea winds that blew across the island they had conquered.

Their origins remained unclear until 1998. It was thought that some of their ancestors came from domestic animals brought by English Loyalists who abandoned North America during the American Revolution. When some of the colonizing attempts failed, the horses were turned loose and left behind.

Others were thought to have come with the logging operations that cleared Wilson city in the south of Great Abaco and Norman's Castle in the north. And these logging horses may have come from Cuba. When the logging company clear-cut itself into oblivion, the horses were abandoned.

In 1998 it was discovered that the horses probably are Spanish Barbs. Pending DNA testing, it is 99% certain that they are genetically pure - having been 'untampered' with for over 250 years.

The Poetry Shack

Christian Campbell will teach an intensive poetry workshop at the National Art Gallery for poets who are serious about developing craft and publishing in local and international journals. The course will focus on mastering many aspects of the craft of poetry, such as traditional poetic forms, metaphor, tone and diction. Like the junkanoo shack, this space will serve as a creative laboratory in which we will translate our visions, engage with multiple traditions, build and innovate.

There will be 3 meetings of the course. The course will meet once a week for two hours per session.

Dates: July 15, 22 and 29 (Sundays, late afternoon)

Fee: $25 per session ($75 total).

Place: National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, West Hill Street

Christian Campbell is an internationally recognized Bahamian poet and scholar. He read English at Balliol College, University of Oxford as the 2002 Commonwealth Caribbean Rhodes Scholar and completed a PhD in English at Duke University. He has taught, presented his work and published widely in the Caribbean, the United States and Britain. His manuscript, Running the Dusk, was named runner-up finalist for the 2005 Cave Canem Poetry Prize by Sonia Sanchez, and his poem, “A Federation of Wings,” was recently nominated for the Forward Poetry Prize for the Best Single Poem published in Britain.

More than 40 males who were once considered menaces to society now have a new, positive label after having completed an intervention programme to steer them on the proper path.

The 41 adolescent and teenaged males graduated from the National Youth Service Restorative Programme for Boys in partnership with the Catholic-run YEAST operation in North Andros on Friday.

The group, whose participants were between the ages of 12 and 19, completed a nine-month training course designed for their complete transformation.

Krista Thompson (Ph.D., Emory University 2002) is Assistant Professor of African Diaspora Art at Northwestern University.

Her teaching and scholarly interests include postcolonial theory and visual culture, race and representation, the imaginative geography of the tropics,Caribbean art, African diaspora performance arts, and photography in Africa and the African diaspora. Her current research examines popular photographic practices in the Caribbean and Southern United States.

She curated an exhibition on colonial photographs of The Bahamas at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas in 2003. She is the recipient of a Prince Claus Fund publication support grant (2002), the David C.Driskell Center for the African Diaspora post-doctoral fellowship (2003) and Institute for the Humanities fellowship from the University of Illinois (2004).

Apple's iPhone Makes It To Stores

Apple's much-hyped iPhone has finally gone on sale in the US.

Some people had been queuing for days outside Apple and AT&T stores across the US to ensure they got hold of one of the devices.

Hundreds more began queuing during the day because stores did not start selling the iPhone until 1800 local time (2300 BST).

Apple said buyers visiting its stores would not be able to walk out with more than two iPhones each.

More than 600 people were outside two Apple stores in New York and at one of them, customers cheered as the doors opened, Reuters news agency said.

Having made an impression on Bahamian poets with international acclaim such as Michael Pintard and made a name for herself as a motivator and inspiration to women, poet, preacher and playwright, Marlene Minus is set to stage a play based on her debut book The Samaritan Collection.

The book which was originally published in 2001 is comprised of two collections of poetry and deals with the extremes of relationships for women – whether with sleazy men, their sisters, mothers, and even with themselves.

"I am truly excited about seeing what started out as just a little idea come to fruition," says Minus. "The book is basically an analogy to the sinful Samaritan woman at the well who was forgiven by Christ. Through these poems, I try to identify that the pain of rejection that forbids us from drawing from and pouring into the well of love and relationship. The ecstasy of love will cause us to come back again for we know there is something at the well that will satisfy our thirst."

Despite what readers may presume, the love Minus talks about is God and she says her readers will become enlightened by understanding the true depth of her poems.

Minus is working with another minister who is knows a thing or two about the stage, L. Terez Davis. Better known for her larger than life alter ego, Dynamite Daisy, Davis serves as the director of the play.

"When I read Marlene's poems I was floored by the way she allowed the core of her soul to be exposed," says Davis. "She has been blessed with a talent and it's not just writing – it's the gift of speaking to women. In these times when we have more unmarried women outnumbering wives in the delivery rooms and so many women falling victims to rape, abuse and murder, this play is something that those silent victims can come to and see themselves. As a result, we hope that they will engage in dialogue that will lead them to put their trust in God and get the help and peace they so desperately desire. I had to join Marlene in this project."

"Everyone has been so supportive," admits Minus. "I've been in touch with many people including the Bureau of Women's Affairs. These are perilous times for women and we can't always admit something is wrong or admit we need help. I hope that the women who see themselves in this play can open up and release their inhibitions."

The cast of the production consists of several familiar faces who have appeared on-stage with Dynamite Daisy in the past year, a few newcomers, choreographer Paul Whylly, Revere Ensemble School of Dance Ministry and Minus' son, Andrew showcasing his pulsating drumming talents. Minus will sign copies of the powerful book which will also be on sale.

Bahamian-born actor Calvin Lockhart dies

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Calvin Lockhart, a Bahamian-born actor who won acclaim for his roles as underworld figures in 1970s "blaxploitation" films, has died. He was 72.

Lockhart, who buried in Nassau on Saturday, died March 29 of complications from a stroke, his wife Jennifer Miles-Lockhart said.

Born the youngest of eight children in 1934, Lockhart moved to New York as a teenager to study engineering but quickly found his calling in the theater.

His first big screen role was in the 1967 film "Joanna," about an interracial romance in London. He was later praised for his portrayal of an unscrupulous preacher in the 1970 Ossie Davis-directed "Cotton Comes to Harlem."

Lockhart also played a disc jockey-turned-sleuth in the 1972 blaxploitation film "Melinda," and the gangster character Biggie Smalls in 1975's "Let's Do It Again."

Lockhart also appeared on the TV series "Dynasty" and had roles in Hollywood hits such as 1988's "Coming to America," starring Eddie Murphy.

"Although his acting career was of relatively short duration, Calvin's cinematic charisma and talents won him high praise from critics and audiences alike all around the world," Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie told the Nassau Guardian newspaper.

Lockhart is survived by his wife and two sons.

The tourist in Freeport, Grand Bahama is a creature starved for information. Street names are irrelevant to locals, appearing only on inconsistent road signs and the hard-to-find maps. Distant nameless hotels reveal themselves to be desolate, storm-ravaged ruins upon close approach. Bus routes are secrets known only to bus drivers themselves. But the attentive tourist begins to notice a single exotic word creeping into view from soda cans and souvenir shops. That word is goombay, and goombay means everything to Bahamian musical culture.
